PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently enhance a bright display by scattering of incident light by applying a wavelength selective reflection device which reflects half of the light in a specified wavelength range of the light exiting from the back face of a liquid crystal cell on the back face side of a liquid crystal cell. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device consists of a scattering/transmission type liquid crystal cell 10, a wavelength selective reflection device 20 disposed in the back face side of the liquid crystal cell 10, and a light absorbing layer 21 disposed in the back face side of the wavelength selective reflection device 20. The scattering/ transmission type liquid crystal cell 10 consists of a pair of substrates 11, 12 on the front face side and back face side joined with a sealing material, transparent electrodes 13, 14 applied on the inner faces of the substrates, respectively, and a liquid crystal layer 15 disposed between the pair of substrates 11, 12. The liquid crystal layer 15 scatters or transmits the incident light according to the changes in the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules by the electric field applied between the electrodes 13, 14. The wavelength selective reflection device 20 reflects almost half of the light in a specified wavelength range of the light exiting from the back face side of the scattering/transmission type liquid crystal cell 10, and it transmits almost half of the light in the specified wavelength range and the light in other wavelength ranges. |
