Prodn. of N-omega-hydroxyalkyl and (poly)oxaalkyl carbamates HO-A-NH-CO2R' (I) comprises reacting an omega-aminoalcohol or amino-(poly)oxaalcohol HO-A-NH2 (II) with urea and an alcohol or ether alcohol R'-OH (III) at 170-250 deg.C with removal of ammonia. A = 2-12C alkylene, oxa-alkylene or polyoxa-alkylene; R' = 1-6C alkyl opt. contg. an O atom. The reaction is pref. carried out at 180-235 deg.C; and the ratio (II):urea:(III) is pref. 1:1-1.5:5-50. The reaction can be carried out in the presence of a metal ion catalyst, e.g. a chloride, bromide, sulphate etc. of Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Sn, Ti etc.
