PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically produce 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid by using industrially available raw materials. SOLUTION: This method for producing 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid is to oxidize a biphenyl compound expressed by general formula (1) (wherein X expresses a halogen, OH, an alkoxy or an alkylcarbonyloxy, or two Xs may be mutually equal or different) in a liquid phase in the presence of a phase- transfer catalyst. |
