PROVIDING SIMULATED BROADCAST SERVICES OVER A LIMITED BANDWIDTH CHANNEL

A system and method is provided for simulating broadcast services over a cable television system by transmitting one or more programs, such as video, to a user in response to the user requesting the programs. A physical-layer channel is dynamically allocated to the user and each requested program is transmitted to the user on the allocated physical-layer channel. Therefore, channel selection is performed at a primary hub, rather than at a user's premises. Additionally, user-profile informatio n can be stored in a primary hub, and one or more programs related to the stored user-profil e information are automatically transmitted to the user without necessarily requiring the user to request the programs.
