A surgical instrument for applying U-shaped or V-shaped clips has a magazine in which the clips are arranged one behind another in at least one row. The instrument has a mechanism (6, 7) which enables the clip, nearest to the distal end of the instrument, to be pushed out through an opening in the distal end. A reloading magazine (2) can be fitted to the distal end of the instrument. The clips held in the reloading magazine are then easily transferred to the magazine fixed to the instrument. USE/ADVANTAGE - Applying clips to a surgical incision. The reloading magazine holds the clips in a sterile environment until they are required for use.
