<p>Treating a melt to reduce metal oxides and/or degas the melt by feeding solid particles or a melt onto an inductively heated bed or column of coke and collecting the resulting reduced and/or degassed melt comprises adjusting the redox potential of the bed or column by injecting gas and adjusting the temperature of the bed or column by varying the power supply and injecting gas. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for treating a melt to reduce metal oxides and/or degas the melt, comprising a feed hopper (1) for solid or molten material, a taphole (12) for discharging the treated melt, a tubular or trough-shaped coke receiver (3) made of electrically insulating material, and cooled induction coils (7, 8, 9) that surround the coke receiver and divide into several axial sections.</p> |
