Surface modification of precipitated calcium carbonate involves contacting the particles with a coating agent and then applying another coating agent. - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for double-coated calcium carbonate particles with a first coating comprising an optionally unsaturated carboxylic acid (e.g. an optionally substituted fatty acid), a fatty alcohol or a polyhydric alcohol and a second coating comprising an optionally substituted polyhydric alcohol.
