PURPOSE:To obtain an acid amide from a corresponding nitrile compound in high catalytic activity and selectivity by using a Raney copper catalyst consisting of spherical fine particles. CONSTITUTION:A >=2C aliphatic saturated nitrile, a >=4C aliphatic unsaturated nitrile or an aromatic nitrile compound is subjected to catalytic hydration at 50-250 deg.C (especially 70-200 deg.C) using a liquid phase suspension bed containing a Raney copper catalyst consisting of spherical fine particles containing <=10% particles of <20mum diameter and essentially free from particles of >=100mum diameter to obtain an acid amide compound corresponding to the nitrile used as a raw material. The spherical Raney copper catalyst is preferably produced by a rotary disk centrifugal spraying method. The rotational speed of the conical rotor used in the above method is preferably 2,000-40,000 rpm and the atmosphere is a mixture of two or more gases having different thermal conductivities and selected from nitrogen, argon and helium. |
