PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the service life of an image forming apparatus by eliminating such a failure that an endless belt is always deviated in one direction during the rotation of the belt, thereby preventing the buildup of the belt from curving on the belt surface side and also preventing the crack or breaking of the belt. SOLUTION: In the beginning of a series of printing processes, an intermediate transfer belt 15 is deviated in the reverse direction. On the basis of a contact/separation mechanism for the intermediate transfer belt 15, the timing of lifting a primary transfer roller 5 is shifted. Since the intermediate transfer belt 15 is deviated to the one side, the front of the primary transfer roller 5 is first lifted and then the other side is lifted. Thus, the intermediate transfer belt 15 that deviates continuously towards the one side can be once deviated toward the other side, thereby preventing the intermediate transfer belt 15 from curving on the belt surface side caused by the continuous deviation of the intermediate transfer belt 15 toward the one side. Accordingly, printed images are prevented from being soiled, and the crack and breaking of the intermediate transfer belt 15 are effectively prevented to extend the service life of the apparatus.
