The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating diabetes, comprising a Polysiphonia japonica extract as an active ingredient. The composition directly recovers a beta-cell (-cell) for producing insulin, regenerates the beta cell for producing insulin by inhibiting the delivery of a BMP signal, and does not cause side effects while recovering the function, thereby being efficiently used for preventing or treating diabetes.
