A programmable luggage tag 10 has a body 11 and includes a bi-stable electronic visual display assembly 60 with a screen 62; a radio receiver (76) configured for short range, non-network reception; and a controller (78) configured to convert short range command signals detected by the receiver into signals suitable to modify the image on the display screen 62. A manually operated input device 73 connects the receiver, controller and battery (79) so that command signals may be received and processed. An RFID transponder assembly 36 may be encapsulated in a planar, resiliently flexible, plastic laminate flap 14 permanently attached to a rigid protective case 80. Thus the RFID transponder is separate from the housing that contains the remaining electric components associated with the display. The bi-stable electronic visual display could be electronic paper or an electro-phoretic display. The short-range radio receiver could use the Bluetooth (RTM) protocol. |
