A fuse comprises a fuse block (Fig 1) defining a chamber, a contact strip 5 at the base of the chamber and a screw cap 3 which retains a cartridge fuse (Fig. 11) in the block, the cartridge being interchangeable and having a tubular ceramic body 9 to one end of which is clamped a portion of a clamping cap 16 which clamps one end of the fusible conductor 11 to the body and includes a neck portion 16<SP>11</SP> extending from the ceramic body and closed by a contact cap 15 in contact with the contact strip 5. The other end of the cartridge is closed by a contact cap 14 which includes a member 13 for indicating the condition of the fusible element. In order that different sizes of cartridge may be accommodated in a given fuse block a range or ranges of metal fittings 17, sized and labelled according to the rating of a cartridge each will accept, are provided for fitment in the block about the end of the cartridge, as shown. No fitting is used where the cartridge inserted is the largest which can be used in the given block. The fittings may be retained in the block by a member having spring arms engaging the fittings.
