A rotary pump or engine, comprises a housing 41, Figs. 1 and 2 formed integral with a guide body 50 and centrally mounting a rotatable shaft 42 formed with an eccentric 45 which through a roller bearing 46 co-operates with a sleeve 47. The guide body 50 is formed with a plurality of radial axially-extending slots within which are slidably mounted blades 48 abutting at their inner ends the sleeve 47 and at their outer ends a cylinder barrel 49 which on rotation of the shaft 42 and gyration of the sleeve 47 gyrates within the housing with its inner peripheral surface in close proximity to the outer peripheral surface of the guide body. Operating as an I. C. engine, gaseous combustion mixture from a carburetter (not shown) enters one of a ring of inlet ports 53 which opens into a working space 54a between adjacent blades giving the largest volume. Gyration of the cylinder barrel 49 in the direction of the arrow compresses the gas which is transferred from a working space 54d of smallest volume through ducts 51 in the blades 48 and body 50 into a working space 55b between the sleeve 47 and body 50 and a pair of adjacent blades. The mixture is then ignited to gyrate the sleeve 47 which through the blades 48 gyrates the cylinder barrel. Spent gases from, e.g., working chamber 55a are expelled through ducts 52 in the blades and body and side ports 56 which may open into an exhaust manifold (not shown) before exhausting to atmosphere. The blades are preferably made from circular bar with plane parallel faces extending axially of the engine and occupy up to 50% of the working spaces of the engine. |
