Aromatic primary haloamines are obtained by hydrogenating the corresponding nitro compound at a temperature of from about 20 DEG to about 150 DEG C. and a pressure between about atmospheric and about 500 p.s.i. in the presence of a catalytic amount of Pt supported on BaCO3 or SrCO3. The concentration of Pt on the carrier can be between about 0.1 and about 20% by weight. The amount of catalyst employed may be between about 0.001% and about 2% by Pt based on the aromatic compound to be reduced. Aromatic haloamines which can be obtained by this process are haloanilines, including fluoroanilines, haloaminophenols, halobiphenyl amines, e.g. 4-fluoro-3-biphenylamine, alkyl haloanilines and haloamino phenyl carboxylic acids. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent, specified solvents being hydrocarbons, lower aliphatic alcohols or the haloaromatic amine product. Examples are given in which o, m and p-chloroaniline, p-bromoaniline and 4-chloro-2-aminotoluene are prepared. |
