[Also in Division E2] The legs 56 of an animal, e.g. a fowl, are released from a shackle when the latter is moved by a conveyer (not shown) in a direction 62 past a fixed, inclined member 60. A disc 26 of the shackle contacts the inclined member and is moved downwardly against the action of a spring 28, thus moving an element 22, which is connected to the disc by a rod 20, downwardly so that projections 52, 54 move to a position below the animal's legs 56 and release the latter. Fig. 7 shows the position immediately prior to release. The shackle includes a frame F, portions 10 and 16 of which are welded to two separate rods 18. Angled ends 46 of the rods 18 co-operate with angled portions 25 of element 22 so that the action of the spring 28 urging portions 25 upwardly acts to urge leg-engaging frame portions 14 towards each other. The action of the spring 28 on inclined shoulders 12 of the frame supplements this urging of portions 14 towards each other. The inclined member 60 is kept in its operative position by a spring 70, which is stronger than spring 28, but is arranged to yield when disc 26 reaches its fully depressed position, as determined by stops (not shown). |
