A multi-spindle drilling machine which may be controlled by a punched tape comprises drilling units 44 driven by a common drive motor 50 through a multiple speed gear-box 48, each unit being pivotable to move it into a position so that its axis is normal to the drilling axis when in the drilling position. The machine comprises a bed 10, a work-table 14, traversed by an electric motor 16, and clamped by an hydraulic clamp, columns 22, 24, a crossbeam 26 supported by the columns, a horizontal slide 34, traversed by a lead screw 38, and a vertical slide 42 which carries units 44. Each unit 44 comprises a casing 54 containing a spindle head 56 which is horizontally slidable on slide 42, the head having a toothed portion 90 which co-operates with an adjustable rack 86 actuated by an hydraulic piston 84, which also controls a head locking clamp 92. Units 44 are arranged in two groups of four, on two halves of a splined shaft 62 which is driven by motor 50 through gears 124, 122, 120, 116 and 114. In operation units 44 are set to the required spacing for a first row of holes to be drilled in the workpiece. If the second row of holes requires less holes than the first the units 44 which are not required are pivoted by their pistons 84, so that they lie at an angle normal to the drilling axis, and the holes are drilled. The drilling operation is continued with the relevant units being pivoted, the programme being fed into a control unit, 52 in the form of a punched tape. |
