Alkali metal salts of C(1-5) alkyl hydroxymethylenemalonates are prepared by reacting a C(1-5) alkyl malonate with a C(1-5) alkyl formate in the presence of a strong alkali metal base. The reaction is carried out either with a molar excess of formate; in a closed system; at between 20 and 35‹ C; or using methyl formate as the alkyl formate. A positive pressure of carbon monoxide may be maintained and the resulting salts reacted with strong acid to produce the corresponding alkyl hydroxymethylene malonate which may be alkylated e.g. with dimethyl sulphate to the alkylalkoxymethylene malonate.
