In an earphone assembly, an earpiece is of soft plastics material or soft rubber and is formed as a moulding having a central recess into which a transducer capsule can be snapped for retention. The moulding is provided with an annular projection by means of which a protective cap is attached on the side remote from the ear. The moulding 1 (Fig. 1) captively holds a transducer capsule 3 by an annular flange 4. A bead 5 ensures sealing contact with the ear. A projection 6 has a double conical aperture 7 for receiving a guide rod 10 of a head strap. A cable sleeve 9 is provided and projections 8 fix the connecting cable. Electrical connections to the capsule 3 may be formed by plugging, clamping or soldering through openings 12. Elements 11 may be embedded in the moulding 1 to provide connections to the capsule 3. An alloy cap 15 is held on an annular projection e.g. by lugs 16. Alternatively, a moulding 17 (Fig. 2) having a cylindrical recess 20 has the sound emitting opening of a capsule 19 facing the bottom of the recess 20 and this recess is sound permeable, either by the provision of apertures 18 or by making the bottom of the recess so thin that it acts as a diaphragm. A cap 21 has a flange 23 which engages a nose 22 on the moulding 17. The moulding 17 is circular, or rectangular with rounded corners, and has a soft bead 26 mounted thereon. Alternatively the bead has an inturned rim (28), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the form of a cap to accommodate the ear and enable the earphone to be worn without a headstrap. |
