A lubricating composition comprises one or more esters of aliphatic C10-20 alcohols and aliphatic C10-20 acids dispersed in an aqueous solution of a hydrophilic colloid. Modified sperm oils (defined) dodecyl stearate, and cetyl palmitate are specified esters, whilst colloids specified are gelatin, albumin, polyvinyl alcohol, hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, cellulose acetate hydrolysed to an acetyl content of 19-26%, water soluble ethanolamine cellulose acetate, polyacrylamide, imidized polyacrylamide, zein, vinyl alcohol polymer containing urethane groups or vinyl alcohol-vinyl cyano acetate copolymer as described in Specification 809,340, or copolymers of a protein and a monomer having a vinyl group as in Specification 841,136, or acrylate copolymers. A mixture of colloids may be used. Optional ingredients are surfactants, e.g. saponin and sodium lauryl sulphate and gelatin hardeners, e.g. formaldehydes, mucochloric acid, trivalant chromium and aluminium salts, and compounds having a plurability of acid anhydride groups.
