[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of the Formula (I) where R represents a C 1-6 alkyl radical, R is an alkyl radical containing at least eight carbon atoms or an alkylbenzyl radical wherein the alkyl group contains at least eight carbon atoms and R 2 represents a hydrogen atom or the group -CH 2 SR 1 . They are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or the acetyl group, R 4 represents a hydrogen atom or the chloromethyl group, and R is as defined above with the mercaptan R 1 SH in the presence of a basic material, followed by, if necessary, the hydrolysis of the acetyl group represented by X<SP>-</SP> to the corresponding phenol. 6 . Tert - butyl - 2,4 - dimethyl - 3 - (octa decylthiomethyl) phenol acetate and 3,5-bis-(dodecylthiomethyl)-2,4,6-trimethyl phneol acetate are prepared as described above. The compounds of Formula (I) act as antioxidants in polymer compositions. |
