1,058,568. Welding by fusion. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Nov. 24, 1964 [Nov. 26, 1963], No. 47744/64. Heading B3R. [Also in Divisions F2 and H1] In' electron beam welding apparatus in which the beam generated in chamber 10 is brought out of vacuum on to the workpiece 14 through an open aperture 29 and in which a stream of inert gas, such as dry nitrogen, is directed across the aperture as shown, by means of a supersonic nozzle 30, to prevent the entry of environmental gas, or in which the beam is brought out through a pressure-stage stretch, a transverse gas stream is provided to deflect particles and vapours emanating from the workpiece from the beam axis. As shown, the further gas stream is diverted through a square or circular passageway 46 and nozzle 48 and an inert gas, e.g. dry nitrogen, or air may be used. Part of the further gas stream is diverted outwardly through the aperture 54 and the stream may be supersonic or subsonic. The further gas stream need not be horizontally diverted and more than one transversely diverted stream may be provided at the same time. |
