1,172,030. Liquid and gaseous seals. SULZER BROS Ltd. 12 Oct., 1967 [12 Oct., 1966], No. 46638/67. Heading F2B. The shaft of a blower for circulating coolant (e.g. carbon dioxide) through a nuclear reactor is sealed by liquid (e.g. oil) supplied through a pipe 16, and a barrier gas seal disposed between the liquid seal and the impeller 2, the barrier gas being circulated in a closed circuit having a fan wheel 5 and means for removing liquid carried away from the liquid seal by the barrier gas. The oil passes through a bearing 13, floating seal rings 15 and control rings 19 to a duct 17. Barrier gas (e.g. carbon dioxide) is passed into an intermediate point 6 in a labyrinth packing. The fan wheel 5 circulates this gas to a preseparator 22, cooler 23 and further separator 24. A tank 26 collects the separated oil and an auxiliary blower 30 passes the gas through final separators 28, 29 back to the labyrinth packing. Make-up gas is supplied from a container 31 to an intermediate point 7 in the packing. The auxiliary blower 30 ensures circulation during starting and stopping and during periods of idling. |
