A miner's cap lamp has locking means for the lens-retaining bezel which can only be released by attaching the lamp to a suitable fitting on a battery charging rack. In the preferred embodiment the headpiece 2 (Figs. 12, 13) to which the bezel 5 is screwed is formed with an extension 20 provided with a rectangular recess R in the base of which is formed a ramp 29. Secured to the ramp by a screw 29a is a cover-plate assembly 24, 26, 28 which forms, in conjunction with the ramp and the edges 20a of the extension 20, a pair of slideways 31, 33 to receive the edges 56, 58 (Fig. 4) of the fitting C. The ramp 29 has a cavity containing a slide S which is urged towards the bezel by a spring 32 and has a tip T adapted to engage in one of a series of notches N spaced around the rim of the bezel. A pivoted latch 44 engages a locking slot 42 in the slide, the shape of the slot being such that if the side 42a bears against the latch the slide can move forward under the action of the spring 32 and the latch can pivot, but if the side 42b bears against the latch the latter jams and movement is impossible. When the headpiece is attached to the fitting C so that the edge 58 enters the slideway 33, as shown in Fig. 12, the edge 58 abuts a cam surface 46 on the latch and rotates the latch to withdraw the slide so that the bezel is free to be removed or tightened as required. When the headpiece is removed from the fitting the slide advances and the tip T can be engaged with a notch N by slight rotation of the bezel. If, however, the headpiece is attached to the fitting in the reverse direction so that the edge 56 enters the slideway 33 a bevelled portion 56a of the edge approaches the cam surface 46 (Fig. 14, not shown) and the slide is not withdrawn. In this way the battery can be charged without unlocking the bezel. The charging circuit is completed through the screw 29a, which connects with a contact 60 on the fitting, and a contact 73 which connects with one of the edges 56, 58. Spring clips and trapping spaces are provided in the ramp 29 (Fig. 3, not shown) to prevent the insertion of tools. In a modification (Fig. 18, not shown) the slide is installed at an angle to the axis of the headpiece and the tip has a bevelled surface to engage the notches in the bezel. |
