In a portable nibbling machine the cutter is reciprocated by a crank-shaft driven by an electric motor, the crank-shaft being connected to a piston carrying the cutter by a joint which allows free rotation of the cutter about an axis lying in the direction of reciprocation of the movable blade. The crank-shaft 2 is supported by a roller bearing 8 and a thrust bearing 10 in a casing 1 and is driven through reduction gearing 4, 5 by the output shaft 7 of an electric motor. A connecting rod 12 is supported on the crank-pin by a roller bearing 11 and has a ball 13 screwed on to its lower end. The ball is received in a socket in a piston 14 and is retained by a nut 15. The piston reciprocates in a cylinder 16 which is rotatably mounted in the casing, by a roller bearing 20, and a sleeve nut 19. An extension of the cylinder 16 supports the fixed cutter 21, to which is attached a guide 23 for the reciprocable cutter 24. As the machine is used the assembly of the fixed and movable blades is free to rotate about the axis of the cylinder 16, to cut in any direction. The cylinder 16 can be locked against rotation by a screw 30. A sleeve 18 screwed on to the forward end of the crankshaft has a female thread to receive a drill chuck shaft. |
