Furnace has drying zone, carbonizing zone and separating zone between these. Composition briquettes are converted by high-temp. gases originating from the briquettes. Reaction shaft has run-off(s) at floor level, outlet ducts for hot gases, CO etc., at upper end, and infeed orifices for primary or secondary O2 or air at middle height.
