A transfer assembly for a press includes at least one longitudinally movable feed bar 19, at least one gripper mechanism 20 carried by at least one feed bar for longitudinally moving a gripper finger mechanism 21 and at least one lifter mechanism 22 for raising and lowering at least one longitudinally movable feed bar 19, the lifter mechanism 22 comprising a lifter housing 30, a plunger 37 vertically slidably mounted in the housing 30 and extending upwardly therefrom, a bracket 41 carried by the upper end of the plunger 37 and having supporting and guiding rollers 42, 43 and 44 thereon, guide tracks 45 on the feed bar or bars 19 engageable with the rollers 42, 43 and 44 and means 48 for raising and lowering the plunger 37. To raise the feed bar 19 a rack 52 is moved to the left as seen in Fig. 6 by a longitudinally reciprocatable rod 25 which rotates the gear 48 in a clockwise direction thus raising the plunger 37 and hence the feed bar 19. To lower the bar the reverse procedure is carried out. Compressed air is supplied via a manifold 56 and connections 57 to a passage 58 which exerts an upward force on the plunger 37 for supporting much of the load of the feed bar 19.
