A relay-actuated reversible automatic steering motor is controlled by a differential amplifier to one input of which is applied a potentiometerderived voltage proportional to course error and to the other input of which is applied the combined outputs of a follow-up potentiometer and a helmoperated potentiometer connected in parallel and supplied through equal series resistors. In a system for steering a ship, Fig.2 a gyro-compass repeater adjusts a potentiometer 17 on deviation from a set course so that a direct voltage change is applied through a low-pass filter circuit F 1 , a transistor impedance matching circuit S 2 , and a high-pass filter circuit F 2 , to a biased differential transistor amplifier 40 so that if the deviation exceeds a predetermined value in either sense, a relay RB or RT is energized to operate areversible steering motor in the appropriate sense to correct the deviation. The filter circuits F 1 and F 2 are adjustable to permit a critically damped response to be obtained for any given loading of the ship. The output of a follow-up potentiometer 13 operated by the steering is applied as negative feedback through a further transistor impedance matching circuit S 1 to the other input of differential amplifier 40. The output of a potentiometer 23 connected in parallel with potentiometer 13 is added to the feedback voltage, and potentiometer 23 is adjusted to cancel the effect of any offset of the steering, to counter crosswind for example, when on the desired course. Initial setting of potentiometer 23 is facilitated by setting switches 11 to position V to disconnect the course deviation signal and the relay control circuits. The proportional band may be set by adjustable resistors Q 1 , Q 2 in series with potentiometers 13, 23. Course deviation signals are limited in each sense by a circuit 30 biased by the voltages from potentiometers 26, 27 also supplied in series with resistors Q 1 , Q 2 . Operation of switches 11 to position M replaces the course deviation signal by a fixed voltage from a potentiometer 66, 67 and permits manual control of steering by potentiometer 23 or another potentiometer substituted for it.</p>
