N,N'-bishydroxyalkyl(or bishydroxypolyoxyalkylene)-hydantoins, prepared by reacting hydantoin (optionally substituted in the 5-position) with an alkylene oxide (ethylene or propylene oxide preferred) in the melt or in solution. I are useful to prepare polyethers and polyesters which may be used as plasticisers or further reacted with polyisocyanates to obtain polyurethanes.
