[Also in Division B1] Gaseous and/or liquid hydrocarbons are flamelessly cracked to give a combustible gas mixture by passing them, together with an amount of oxygen and/or air that is insufficient for complete combustion, with or without an addition of steam and/or CO 2 through a catalyst bed comprising on the entry side a nickel on zirconim silicate catalyst and on the exit side a nickel on magnesia catalyst; the hydrocarbons and the gases containing the free oxygen and any steam that is introduced being separately preheated. The nickel on zirconium silicate catalyst may contain from 2 to 20% by weight of nickel and this catalyst may constitute from 1 to 10% of the total volume of cracking catalyst whereas the nickel on magnesia catalyst may contain 3% by weight of nickel. The cracking may be carried out at a pressure of 1 to 50 atmospheres absolute and in an example a preheat temperature of 450‹ C. and a reaction temperature of 900‹ C. are used in the cracking of a petrol cut boiling between 35‹ and 185‹ C. 1 to 10% of the product cracked gas may be recycled through the bed either to supplement or to replace the steam. |
