Gases rising in a chimney 2 are deflected downwardly by a dished baffle 5 to pass through a venturi-scrubber formed around the upper end of the chimney, liquid being supplied to the surface of the baffle 5 by a pipe 7 and by a pipe 14 to the upper edge of a frusto-conical member 12 as shown. Gas from the venturi-scrubber passes to an outlet 25 through an annular zone containing packing 21 wetted by liquid from sprays 24. The baffle 5 preferably has a circumferential notched weir 9. The baffle 5 may be in the form of a shallow cone. |
