1,191,688. Polybutene-1. CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS A.G. 30 Aug., 1967 [31 Aug., 1966], No. 39677/67. Heading C3P. In the polymerization of butene-1 by the low pressure method, the polymerization is carried out in the presence of an inert filler, which is added in an inert solvent together with catalyst components consisting of a reduced heavy metal compound and an organometallic halogen compound. The filler may be carbon black, a finely divided silicate, an oxide, a pigment or an active silicic acid of surface area 80 to 200 sq. m./gm. The filler is preferably added in an amount of 0À5 to 40% by weight based on the butene- 1. In batchwise polymerization, the addition may be made before or during polymerization, all at once or in individual portions; in continuous polymerization, the addition may be continuous or in frequent small portions. In the examples, butene-1 is polymerized using a catalyst system comprising hexane solutions of titanium trichloride and di-ethyl aluminium chloride, and using one of the following fillersactive acetylene black, pigment carbon black, printing ink carbon black, active silicic acid and titanium dioxide. |
