Heading B1C [Also in Division F4] A mixer or heat exchanger has intermeshing counter-rotating screws 3, 6; the angular velocity of one screw may be temporarily altered to move the screws from the position shown in Fig. 1 to one in which one face of each screw is in mutual contact, see Fig. 2 (and also Fig. 3, not shown), so that the screws are self-cleaning. If they are moved rapidly from the limiting position of Fig. 2 to that of Fig. 3 .an additional squeezing and kneading action is provided; they may be oscillated rapidly between the two positions. The screws may be single or multi-tlareaded; if they have different members of threads their angular velocities will be inversely proportional thereto. The thread sections may be triangular; rectangular, trapezoidal or sawtooth; they may intermesh partly or wholly. The threads and shafts may be hollow, and the casing jacketed, for the passage of a heat exchanger fluid. The variation in velocity may be achieved by use of differential summation gearing (see Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). |
