PURPOSE:To produce 2,6-diethylnaphthalene useful as a raw material for 2,6- naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, etc., in high efficiency at a low cost. CONSTITUTION:The production process is composed of a reaction process to react naphthalene and/or ethylnaphthalene with polyethylbenzene in the presence of an acid catalyst and a separation process containing a distillation separation step, an adsorption separation step and a crystallization separation step to separate 2,6-diethylnaphthalene from the reaction product obtained by the reaction process. At least a part of residual naphthalene and ethylnaphthalene left after the separation of 2,6-diethylnaphthalene obtained by the separation process is circulated to the reaction process. The treating process for polyethylbenzene can be omitted and, furthermore, the by-produced ethylbenzene can be recovered as a useful product to further improve the industrial significance of the process by using a polyethylbenzene produced as a by-product in an ethylbenzene production process as a raw material for an ethylation agent. |
