Selective hydrogenation of organic compds - using a metal hydride catalyst

Organic compds. with one or more alpha-hydroxylated acetylene gps. are selectively hydrogenated to corresponding ethylene carbinols by carrying out hydrogenation using a lower alkoxy-lower alkylenoxy alkali metal/Al-hydride, pref. at -70 degrees C to +80 degrees C. The org. alpha-hydroxy acetylene cpd. is pref. one having the gen. formula where n is 0 or 1, R1 and R2 are H or lower alkyl, R3 and R4 are H or an opt. -OH or trimethylcyclohexyl substd. alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or alkenylidene residue or R1 and R3 together form a trimethylcyclohexyl ring.
