A tape measure comprises end caps 2, 3 covering and screwed to a central shell 4 containing a rotatable tape drum 24 and a three fingered braking spring 17, 18 non-rotatably held in slits 20 in the shell but adapted to press against the outermost coil of the tape. The shell 4 may also comprise three spring braking fingers 21. The tape emerges through slits 14 and 15 in the end caps and may be guided by rollers mounted across an opening 12 in a portion 10. In modifications, the drum may itself be friction braked. |
