A percarboxylic acid solution is prepared by replacing the solvent in a solution of H 2 O 2 in isopropanol with an ester solvent for H 2 O 2 having the formula R-COOR<SP>1</SP>, in which R and R<SP>1</SP> are each C 1-5 alkyl which may be substituted with at least one electrophilic group, by adding the ester solvent and subsequently distilling to remove the isopropanol and reacting the resulting H 2 O 2 solution with at least one carboxylic acid of the formula R 1 COOH, in which R 1 is H, phenyl or C 1-5 alkyl which may be substituted by at least one electrophilic group, to give the percarboxylic acid solution, with the proviso that when the ester solvent forms an azeotrope with the isopropanol the azeotrope must have a lower b.pt. than isopropanol and when it does not form an azeotrope it must have a higher b.pt. than isopropanol, the process being carried out in the absence of heavy metal ions and under conditions minimizing decomposition. The starting solution of H 2 O 2 is preferably obtained by oxidizing, in the liquid phase, isopropanol with oxygen at elevated temperature and removing acetone from the reaction product. The ester solvent may be isopropyl acetate or n-pentyl acetate and the carboxylic acid may be acetic acid. |
