Inorganic coatings with improved adhesion, unaffected by moisture, to protect plastic articles against scratching or scuffing without affecting the transparency of the articles are obtained by first immersing the plastic in a saturated hydrocarbon solvent, pref. followed by subjecting the article to a silent discharge, and then vacuum-depositing the inorganic coating.
