Apparatus for finishing the spherical surfaces 2 of ball-ended pins 1 comprises a workholder 5 to receive rotatably the pin of the ball-ended pin, a toolholder 3 for a rotatable grinding tool 4 having a hollow profile corresponding to the spherical surface to be ground, a centring roll 7 provided with a circumferential groove 6, and a rotatable friction roll 8, the rolls 7, 8 being disposed to form a wedge for receiving the ballend of the pin. The pin is received in a bush loosely rotatable in the workholder and swing- able about an axis 14 by a handle 16 to position the workholder between loading and operative positions. The centring roll 7 consists of two conical half rolls and may be driven. The friction roll 8 is rotated by a belt-driven pulley 9 and its direction of rotation is such as to urge the ball end of the pin into the wedge formed by the rolls. The toolholder 3 and grinding wheel 4 are pivotable about an axis perpendicular to the axis 14 so as to accommodate the grinding wheel to the ball-end 2. |
