1346643 Movable barrages RIVA CALZONI SpA 19 April 1971 [16 March 1971] 23342/71 Heading E1H A movable barrage for temporarily damming a canal, lagoon access channel or other navigable waterway, is formed of one or more hollow elements 1 which may be pivoted about a hinge 2 from an immersed position in a recess 6 provided by a base 3 which extends transversely across the waterway, to an upstanding damming position. Neither the base 3, nor the element 1 when immersed project above the bed 7 of the waterway. The upward pivoting is effected by compressed air fed into the hollow element through duct 20 thereby discharging water from it through one or more regulatable apertures 19. The element is formed by a braced casing of welded sheets 15 and may include a sealed float chamber 17 at its upper end. The duct 20 is connected to a further duct 29 mounted in base 3 through an articulated joint in the form of a flexible tube section (Figs. 6 and 7 not shown) or a pivotable union tube (Fig. 3 not shown). Cam means (52 Fig. 4 not shown) secured to the union tube may be used to indicate when the immersed and damming positions of the barrage have been reached. A seal between the base 3 and the bottom edge of the barrage may be formed by a flexible sheet member clamped between them (Fig. 5 not shown) or by co-operating plate members on the base and the barrage respectively which abut when the barrage is in the damming position (Fig. 4 not shown). The hinge parts may have a heated fluid circulated through them to inhibit marine growth on them (Fig. 3 not shown). Where the barrage is formed of two or more side by side elements the lateral gaps between them may be varied by adjusting plates fixed to their sides.
