Atactic polymers are prepared by polymerising alpha-olefins in the presence of Ziegler catalysts comprising a trivalent titanium compound and an alkyl aluminium fluoride of formula AlR3-nFn, where R is a 1-10C alkyl and n is 0.5 to 1.5. Any insoluble isotactic polymer produced may be easily separated. Atactic polymer of up to 98% purity can be obtained.
