A data storage record such as an Itek RS microfiche is updated by delineating an area to be processed, dark-adapting at least this area and exposing to input data, and processing in the delineated area. In one embodiment, desensitization or dark adaptation is accomplished by treatment with hydrogen peroxide, followed by resensitization by the application of a reactive material such as a silver salt.
