Shaped articles comprise a mixture of a crystalline olefin polymer and 1 to 25 per cent based on the weight of olefin polymer of a basic nitrogen containing polycondensate of epichlorohydrin with a bis-secondary amine and a diphenolic compound. The articles may be textile fibres and filaments, tapes or films. The olefin polymer may be polypropylene. The polycondensate may be prepared from dialkyl alkylenediamines, piperazine, 2-methyl piperazine or 2,5-dimethyl piperazine and 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, pyrocatechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone or 4,41-dihydroxy diphenyl methane. The polycondensates may be rendered water-insoluble by treating the articles with epoxy compounds, isocyanates, aldehydes, halogens or divinyl benzene. The polycondensates are said to improve the dyeability of the olefin polymer articles, which may be further improved by treatment with an acid. In examples epichlorohydrin and piperazine are reacted with (1 and 2) bisphenol A and (3) hydroquinone in methanol with the addition of sodium hydroxide in the later stages of the reaction. The products are mixed with polypropylene, calcium stearate and titanium dioxide and the resulting compositions melt spun into fibres which are stretched, treated with a solution of ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether and dyed.ALSO:Articles such as fibres, filaments, films and tapes made of compositions comprising a crystalline olefin polymer and 1 to 25 weight per cent based on said polymer of a polycondensate of epichlorohydrin, a bis secondary amine and a diphenolic compound or diglycigyl ether thereof, may be dyed with acid, metallised and dispersed dyestuffs. The olefin polymer may be polypropylene and the polycondensate may be derived from dialkyl alkylenediamines, piperazine, 2-methyl piperazine or 2, 5-dimethyl piperazine and 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, pyrocatechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone or 4,4/sv-dihydroxy diphenyl methane. The polycondensates may be rendered water-insoluble by treating the articles with epoxy compounds, isocyanates, aldehydes, halogens or divinyl benzene, and dyeability may be further improved by treating the articles with an acid. Dyeing with acid and metallised dyestuffs may be effected in the presence of ammonium acetate and a surface active agent, e.g. an alkyl phenol/ethylene oxide condensate, with the addition of acetic acid to improve exhaustion of the dyebath. Dyeing with disperse dyestuffs may be effected in the presence of a surface active agent. In examples fibres made of compositions comprising polypropylene, calcium stearate, titanium dioxide and polycondensates of epichlorohydrin, piperazine and (1 and 2) bisphenol A and (3) hydroquinone are dyed with acid, metallised and disperse dyes. |
