Such erythrocytes form a diagnostic substance; when mixed with serum from a living body, agglutination indicates infection of the body by bacteria whose phages are similar to those borne by the erythrocytes. The erythrocytes may be treated with tannic acid after the first aldehyde treatment and before contacting with bacteria. The contacting with bacteria is preferably done in the presence of a sugar or a protein. The treated cells may be lyophilized. In Examples the bacteria are staphylococci. |
