A process is described in which suberic acid is esterified, e.g. with methanol, converted to alkyl-7-bromoheptanoate which is oxidized with a mild base, e.g. pyridine-N-oxide to alkyl 7-oxoheptanoate, which is reacted with diethyl-2-(cyclohexyl imino) ethane phosphonate in the presence of sodium hydride in tetrahydrofuran to yield alkyl 9-oxo-oct-7-enoate which is reacted with propyltriphenylphosphonium bromide followed by saponification to the trans-7-cis,trans-9- dodeca-dienoic acid. The acid is then reduced, e.g. with lithium aluminium hydride or sodium dihydro-bis-(2-methoxy ethoxy) aluminate to the alcohol and acetylated. The compounds are used as insect, e.g. Lobesia botrana attractants in insect control methods. |
