<p>1,207,634. Tape cassette apparatus. MOTOROLA Inc. 1 May, 1969 [21 May, 1968], No. 22311/69. Heading G5R. A converter cartridge, enabling one type of cassette to be played in a machine designed for use with a different type of cassette, contains transport apparatus to drive the tape of a cassette inserted therein and is formed for reception in the machine. Operation.-A twin spool cassette is loaded over spindles 51b, 52b and capstan 62 of the converter, Fig. 5, and the assembly loaded into the receptacle of an endless 4- or 8-track cassette player. On loading, roller 7 in the machine shifts cam 20 to operate slide 40 and thereby slide 49 to automatically begin playing. Slide 40 makes contacts 41, 42 to energize amplifier 31 which is fed with signals from converter head 30 and which feeds a magnetic field generator (32, Fig. 4, not shown), cooperating with the machine head. Concurrently, pin 48 on slide 49 is released from engagement with wire spring 95, Fig. 8, on brake member 93 having shoes 96, 97 normally held against the spool spindles; a roller 145 on slide 49 draws slide-plate 110 inwards to swing pinch roller 75 toward capstan 62 and head 30 against the tape, and to allow pin 114, operating in cam slot 115, to move leftwards, thereby engaging roller 65 with spool spindle 52b, roller 65 being coaxial with an identical roller (71) engaged with a further roller 64 driven by a belt 61 connecting pinch roller 60 and capstan 62. The tape continues to play until power to the machine is interrupted, where - upon the converter is ejected (not detailed) and the mechanism returned to the rest state of Fig. 5. A microphone (33) and oscillator (34) are provided in the converter for recording. Rewind is effected by depressing button 23 to press lever 155, Fig. 21, inwards. The lever 155 is pivoted at 151 to slide 49 and at 156 to pivotal arm 157 such that, on initial movement, roller 145 moves slide 49 and plate 110 outwardly to disengage the head 30 and pinch roller 75 and to apply the spool brakes. .On further movement, the roller 145 enters the left-hand enlargement of the cam slot 173 so that plate 110 is not moved further, but slide 49 is both rotated and moved inwards to release the brakes and pivot a bracket carrying a pair of meshing rollers (outlined in Fig. 8) so that the smaller engages the flywheel 63 and the larger engages spool spindle 51b. Upon release of the button, the above sequence is reversed and normal play continues after a temporary application of the brakes. If desired, the other button 22 may be pressed to latch the first in rewind, both buttons being released upon slight depression of the first 23 (Fig. 11, not shown). Forward wind is effected in a similar manner by depressing button 22 to engage the larger roller on the pivotal bracket with the flywheel 63 and spool spindle 52b, with the option of latching it by depressing button 23 as above.</p> |
