The cooling system, for underground gas-filled cables, has higher efficiency allowing simpler construction than existing forms. The cable (2) is enclosed in an outer sheath (2a) that lies in contact with the trench fill (5). An adhesive plastic-like material (1) connects part of the outer sheath to the cooling pipes (3) and the material has thermal properties designed for below 50 deg.C cm/W and for a temp. range of 40-100 deg.C. In the latter temp. range the material becomes plastic and adhesive. The material may be asphalt or bitumen filled with a metal mesh or wire wool of Cu, a1, Fe or steel.
