The gear change lever is pivoted to a universal joint cross bolt (4, 5) and has ratchets (7, 8) to work with a spring loaded ball (10) and check bolt (9), located in the universal joint cross piece (14). the bolt (9) is pressed into a recess (13) in the selector sleeve (6) after a gear has been selected and the lever returned to the output position. The gear lever is moved to either left or right to change gear to turn the selector sleeve (6). When a forward speed is engaged, the check bolt (9) rests on part of the sleeve which has no recess. The bolt causes the ball to engage with a ratchet (7, 8) and prevent the lever from moving the next plane.
