Two driven pairs of rollers (1, 2) are provided for the frictional conveyance of a nonwoven web (10). The rear pair of rollers (1) is stopped intermittently in order to tear the nonwoven web. Stopping is determined by a signal which corresponds to a predetermined nonwoven-web length. The outer surfaces of the continuously rotating rollers (13, 14) of the front pair of rollers (2) are provided with a multiplicity of circumferential grooves which are offset tooth to space relative to one another. The nonwoven web (10) lies between them. A different density of the nonwoven web (10) is indicated by a different spacing of the grooved rollers (13, 14). The deflection of the roller (13) is transmitted via a rocker (16) to a feeler (39) of an electrical potentiometer (36, 37) which converts the deflection into an electrical correcting signal, by means of which the signal, mentioned in the introduction, corresponding to a predetermined nonwoven-web length is corrected for the purpose of the early, simultaneous or delayed stopping of the otherwise rotating rollers (3, 4) of the rear pair of rollers (1). The nonwoven (10) is then torn between the two pairs of rollers (1, 2). Nonwoven-web portions of differing length are thus severed from the delivered nonwoven web (10) as a function of the fluctuating nonwoven-web density by means of the correcting signal, the nonwoven-web portions being units of identical weight. Identical weight quantities of wadding for packaging or for further processing, for example to form sanitary towels or tampons, can thus always be provided. <IMAGE>
