The vehicle drive system (1) has an asynchronous motor (2) mechanically coupled to a wheel (3) of the vehicle, a rechargeable accumulator (4), a first converter (5) interposed between the accumulator (4) and the motor (2) and arranged so as to regulate the electric power supplied to the motor (2) and a generator (8) driven by an internal combustion engine (7), as well as a control circuit (6).
