In jigging machines, in particular movable-sieve jigs, optimum operating functions are usually set by machine. Difficulties arise with this, in particular in underground use. In order to remedy this, the invention proposed a method and an uncomplicated device for controlling jigging machines, the material charging of the rocker and the mass ratio of materials with different weights which are separated in layers by the separating effect of the jigging bed being determined in the jigging bed during on-going operation and the determined values being used to control the jigging machine. A device which is suitable for this is characterised in that a force measuring device is arranged in the rocker or the rocker is constructed as such a device. <IMAGE>
